About Me
Chia-Hsuan Tsai is a freelance documentary filmmaker based in Taipei, Taiwan. Despite her academic background in atmospheric science, her passion for the arts and humanities led her to explore the world of filmmaking. She was inspired by the Taiwanese documentary "Lesbian Factory" and has since focused her work on producing documentaries that explore gender and cultural issues.
Her works include “Moving In Between,” a documentary that explores the journey of a transgender woman, “Fatbulous Me,” which delves into issues of body image, and “Mimi’s Utopia,” which addresses the challenges faced by undocumented foreign workers and their children. Chia-Hsuan is currently working on a two-year documentary project with the Taiwan Tongzhi Hotline Association, documenting a transgender man who wants to be a bodybuilder and the surgeries he undergoes.
She approaches her work through a gender-sensitive and intersectional lens, aiming to promote social justice and raise awareness for marginalized communities. Collaborating closely with her filming subjects, she strives to tell authentic stories that evoke empathy and understanding in her audience. Her works have been featured in film festivals, cinemas, TV, and online streaming platforms, and she is excited to continue taking on new challenges and opportunities in her field.

Freelance Documentary Filmmaker
After completing my graduate studies, I have been working as a freelance filmmaker. Throughout my career, I have produced works that shine a light on social issues, with a particular focus on the experiences of women, LGBTQ+ individuals, foreign workers and their children in Taiwan. I have collaborated with various organizations and companies on projects related to my interests.
Project Assistant of Media Department
As a project assistant for the "Prospering Ankang, Benefiting Wenshan" University Social Responsibility (USR) Project at National Chengchi University, my role was to document the workshops and activities taking place in the Ankang Low-Cost Housing Community. Through filming videos, I helped capture the progress of the project as it aimed to empower the residents of the community.
Production Assistant
I have worked with three different production companies on a part-time basis while attending graduate school. I have gained valuable experience in various roles such as director's assistant, photographer's assistant, line producer, planner, video editor, and subtitle translator.
